Frequently Asked Questions about Spam Filtering:
What is involved in implementing the service?
All that is necessary is a change in your DNS records, so that the 'MX' (mail exchanger) entries for your domain point to our systems.
After that change has been made, your e-mail will be redirected through the spam filters before being automatically delivered to your mail server.
Is there any downtime necessary to implement?
There is no downtime involved in implementation. The setup process is fast and completely seamless, and does not affect or delay your inbound or outbound e-mail.
How soon will we start seeing results?
Typically filtering begins within a few hours of set up, and often within a few minutes of that change, for a significant
percentage of your inbound e-mail. There is no interruption to your mail flow.
How reliable is your spam filtering?
This service has been designed to handle both the rapidly growing volume of e-mail and the heavy peak loads that are characteristic of e-mail traffic.
There is no single point of failure and provides for 99.999% uptime.
Will we experience delays in receiving messages?
No, your message is typically processed in less than a second.
What percentage of junk e-mail does it catch?
The detection rate varies by customer and is based on the e-mail traffic patterns for a given domain, and on the aggressiveness for
that domain (we can configure how aggressive the filter should be). On average, over 98% of junk e-mail and 100% of e-mail-borne viruses are blocked.
What are whitelists and blacklists?
Whitelists are rules that allow messages to be delivered based on their 'from' e-mail address or domain name, regardless of content.
If you would like to guarantee that all messages from yourcustomer.com, for example, will not be flagged as spam regardless of what those messages
contain, you can simply add that domain to your whitelist. Conversely, blacklists are rules that block messages based on the domain name or e-mail address of the sender.
Is spam filtering a substitute for our current anti-virus software?
We do not recommend that you eliminate your current virus protection, in large part because viruses can be spread through means other than e-mail,
or attached to an e-mail recipient included in your whitelist. Spam filtering will add a layer of protection as an additional defense.
Does your spam filtering service work with Microsoft Exchange?
Yes, it works seamlessly with any mail server that you are using, such as Microsoft Exchange, Novell Groupwise, and Lotus Notes,
as well as any other mail server software that you may be using.
Does your spam filtering service support Macintosh, Linux, or Unix environments?
Yes, it is a service rather than a product, and no software needs to be installed on your mail server or at workstations. Therefore, any mail server,
any e-mail client, and any operating system(s) in use at a given organization are supported.
If my company hosts e-mail at an external provider, will your spam filtering service work?
Yes. Many companies use an externally hosted e-mail server, in addition to or in lieu of an internal mail server. Our service
works correctly regardless of where a company's mail server or servers are located.
Are there any set-up fees or implementation costs?
No. Since there is no hardware or software to purchase, there are no one-time fees. There is simply a per-user price.
How is my organization billed?
You will be billed quarterly by invoice, or include this service with your managed services agreement.
